470 ml water
170 grams lye (100% caustic soda)
250 ml avocado oil
220 ml olive oil
400 grams solid coconut oil
675 grams vegetable shortening
Lavender Essential oil
You need to wear protective goggles and gloves during first part
of the process in case anything splashes.
Mix the water and lye together in large stainless steel bowl. It will fizz and get really hot. Leave to sit.
Meanwhile heat the oils together over a low heat in a large stainless steel cooking pot. You need to heat it up to 38 degrees celsius. Watch the lye mixture, needs to drop to 38 degrees also.
When they are both at the same temperature remove the oil from the heat and mix with the lye stirring constantly.
Eventually it will start to drag when pulling the spoon through. This can take quite some time. You will know when you are there when the mixture is thick and the spoon leaves a channel that takes a few seconds to fill up.
Add as much lavender essential oil as you desire. Pour into soap moulds. I use a large tupperware container and then cut the soap when it's firm. Cover with a towel for 24 hours. The soap will be hard and come out of the moulds or container easily. If not leave it for a few more days. Put on wire baking trays to dry completely before use, approximately three weeks.
