As parents there are many choices and decisions we need to make on a daily basis, some big, some small. All of these
choices we make can have an  impact on the lives of our children.

Do we choose to take the time to connect or do we rush from one thing to another? Do we choose to stop and answer a question or do we say 'I don't know'?

Imagine to yourself if you took the time to answer every question your child asked you, and if you didn't know the answer or couldn't answer it at that particular moment, you said 'Hey, what a great question, let's find out'.

Just think how much our children's knowledge of the world would grow. Not only that, but what we as parents would also learn.

Do we say to our inquisitive 3 year old,  'Look at the birdie'?  To which they reply, 'What's it's name?'.  Here is where we have a choice.  Do we take the lazy option and say 'I  don't know' or do we evoke interest in our child's natural curiosity?

I say take the latter. I would say 'Wow, look at  that bird...what do you think it is? I haven't seen one of those before, lets  find out what it's name is'.

Connecting together to find the answer, either in a book or on the computer or at the local library. This could be extended into other areas of development, like creative  arts, drawing or painting the bird. All of these activities reinforce our children's natural interests and learning experience.

I have listened to parents whose 'mantra' is 'I don't know'. How do we expect our children to learn new things when  the people they want to learn most from, will not even make the effort to find out an answer with them!!!

Over the years of natural learning with our children, we have learnt so much. I would have never imagined having such a knowledge of dinosaurs,  marine creatures or even native Australian birds. Yet through our children's natural inquisitiveness, these are some of the topics we have researched and learnt together.

At the heart of natural learning is the parent answering their children's questions and modelling ways of finding out the answers we may not know, and there are LOTS of questions I cannot answer initially. Even so, I try not to  say 'I don't know', I say 'Let's find out' or 'What a great question, we will need to research that' etc. Children lead the learning experience and we as parents are there to facilitate.

Some parents and children are suprised by just how much our children know about different topics, but really it just comes down to answering their questions and taking an interest in what they want to learn and not telling them what they have to learn.

John Holt, in his book How Children Learn, reminds us, that we need to TRUST CHILDREN, to know when they are ready to learn and what they are interested in learning.

So, regardless of your choice in educating your children, as parents we have so many opportunites to expand our children's interest in the world around them, just by taking the time to answer their questions.

I understand this will be difficult to read for a lot of people. However as our skin absorbs everything we put on it, we need to inform ourselves on the dangers of the majority of chemicals in our personal care products.

Killing Her Softly...with toxic care products

When the alarm rings she slowly  gets out of bed, turns on the shower and under the steady stream of warm water,  she gently scrubs her body with Ammonia, Formaldehyde and Phenol.

Next, she shampoos her tinted hair with DEA and Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.

Rinsing the shampoo, she applies a good amount of  mutagenic DEA & Propylene Glycol and lets it penetrate while she pops the
top on the shaving cream and shaves her legs with A-Pinene.

The shower finished, she towel dries and spreads  on an even coat of Contaminant, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PHAs) and a dusting of an Asbestos Substance over her skin. She sprays the scented Aluminum under her arms, brushes her teeth with FD&C Blue#1 & Resorcinol, Saccharin, and Fluoride. Then she rinses and gargles with Ethanol and Phenol  Alcohol. She combs setting gel through her hair then blows it dry and sprays it  with polyvinylpyrrolidine (PVP).

Sitting at her vanity, she carefully applies a thin film of Phenol Carbolic

Acid, Dioxin and Propylene Glycol, over her face to reduce the fine lines.

Today, she'll wear foundation and a little FD&C Red #3. And, better add some eye-Iron Oxide for today is a special meeting and a little Toxic and Mutagenic Ascorbyl Palmitate to line her lids and  a stroke of Bacteria & Polyvinylpyrrolide (PVP) to her lashes.

A dab of Benzo-A-Pyrene and Benzo-B-Fluroanthene  to color her lips, a spritz of her favorite scent, Toluene and Benzaldehyde, and  a little Carcinogenic Nitrosamine, NMPABAO on her face arms and legs to block  the suns rays and she  is set for the day.

She looks radiant and healthy, but her  looks are killing her!

If you are wondering if these poisons are being absorbed through her skin go cut open a clove of garlic and rub it on the
bottom  of your foot and see how long it takes to taste it in your mouth, about  3  seconds!

There is a way to avoid all these chemicals being absorbed in your body....STOP using them!

There are alternatives......read the ingredients on your personal care products, are they nurturing you or poisoning you?

For options.....go to Miessence

You deserve the best ..... nurture yourself and your family with chemical free products.

I received an email from a mum who was completely overwhelmed with her responsibilities as a mother and found herself yelling and hitting her children. She always thought she would be a patient and calm parent, so every night she was plagued with guilt and remorse, vowing to change her ways. Yet the very next day there was more yelling and hitting, so the cycle continued.

How did I respond to this cry for help?

I wrote......

To start with , I just want to say you are amazing!
You are pregnant almost about to give birth and you also have three other young children in your care!
I can imagine your home is super busy and wildly noisy, with a to-do
list that keeps on growing longer by the day?
Are your days a blur of busy-ness, where you feel like you don’t get much accomplished?
The truth is ... you DO so much!
You are working very hard with all those gorgeous little children in your
care.

Who is caring for you?
Are you?
Do you have any support?
Can you ask friends or relatives for help?

You are important and what you are  doing matters!

Let go of your guilt....we ALL make mistakes! To rid yourself of guilt you need to STOP doing what makes you feel gulity!

LOVE yourself and your children and let go of the rest. You have the power to change and BE the patient and gentle parent you want to be.
When you get yourself to the present moment – that is ALL there is.

Let go of perfection – just flow, slow down and appreciate your
children. Read books and leave the dishes, go to the park and sweep the floor later, snuggle and watch a movie with your children.....

What you are doing matters a lot!

You are needed ALL day long! It’s exhausting, but it will pass. They will
grow up and you WILL have all the time in the world.

Your children will NOT remember a clean, spotless home, but WILL
remember a Mum who always had time to connect with them.

When you get to a place of connecting with your children, rather than
trying to control them....you will NOT need to be yelling or hitting
them.

If you are nagging and yelling I guarantee your children will NOT be listening. Would you listen if someone was yelling at you?
If you want your children to listen to you, then connect and listen to
them!
One tip to connect with ALL of your children is to allow at least 10
minutes a day for one on one special time, with complete focus on
them.....getting down to their level and doing something that interests
them.

Focus on connection and the positive attributes of your children. Do you hear yourself constantly thinking negative thoughts about your children? Your thoughts will impact the way you feel and behave toward them.

Your thoughts create your reality....change your perspective. Look beyond the behaviours to the feelings behind what’s happening?
Are there any unmet needs?

Our children do NOT need to be labelled! How you label them is how they will see themselves. Naughty is a word we DO NOT use!
Children are LEARNING!

For example, instead of, ‘he is always disrespectful to me’, try, ‘he is learning to relate to me and I need to respect him, so he learns to respect others’.

There is no perfect way to be a parent, we are always learning and our children are  always learning from us, so we need to be teaching them consciously. Children are mirrors, our responses set the tone for how they respond to us.

One question I always ask myself when my children are acting out, is how is my relationship with my husband at that time?

Every single bit of energy we put into our relationship will come back to us through our children. Happy parents make happy kids. Is there a sense of warmth in your home or is it full of tension? Our homes need to be havens, where we all feel nurtured and welcome.

I think the main idea to get from this is to take care of yourself and your thoughts, so you can then care for your children optimally.
Put nurturing yourself as a priority in your life, ask for help, we ALL
need support.
You can be that parent you always wanted to be. Your children NEED you to be that emotionally stable, unconditional love and support that they deserve.

After watching the award winning documentary; Wasteland, I started thinking about what I am  teaching my children in regard to our purchases as a family.....

I  realised that even though I am mindful of buying products
from companies that I  know and trust, and the majority of our clothes and furniture are second hand or  australian made, or gifts from friends and family.  At times though, we buy things that  we do not really need. Also some of these things come from China or some other  third world country, where the employment
practises are far from fair and just, whether it's a toy, or a new rubbish bin or even underwear.

As I look  around our home I realise we have everything we need. So why does our society  try to make us think that we
constantly need MORE?

We live simply as a  family, and our children do not demand things from us, as you hear other parents  complain that their
children do. I think this is primarily because our children  do not watch advertising and never have, except for the odd occasion when we are  staying at  Grandparents or visiting friends. We do have a TV, yet we watch only  movies, documentaries and an advertising free children's channel.

So the challenge for us now is to really up our second hand purchases, and encourage others to follow suit. Our world cannot continue to sustain our material ambitions.

Let's all  show our children how much we care about their future, by how we treat our  planet. We can NOT continue on the way we are going and expect our precious  planet to just keep giving endlessly.
Think about what you are  buying...do you really need it?

One of my greatest lessons in life so far, has been to trust myself first.

There will always be other opinions, whether it's friends, family, or even society at large, but only I know what is best for me.

In our western society we are taught to not think for ourselves and to put so called 'experts', such as doctors, teachers, politicians, scientists etc up on  pedestals and to take every word they feed us as the truth.

And the majority of our society do just that..by mindlessly watching TV, injecting their children with unknown vaccines, feeding them foods laden with chemicals, treating pregnancy as a medical procedure rather than a completely natural process...the examples could go on & on...

An example of how we are completely misled by the media was a chance watching of MEDIA WATCH on the ABC last week. They spoke of a 'germ expert' being interviewed  by a mainstream news channel and also on the radio. He was advocating the use of bleach for cleaning everything in the home, to save your family from nasty germs. He turned out to be an employee of White Power, a bleach manufacturer!

So these so-called news stories are actually just more advertising!
Bleach is a poison by the way and an increased use in the home will pollute our waterways!

The mass population are being brainwashed daily by TV and other forms of media! Why do the masses allow this to happen .... where does this compliance and conformity come from?

Sadly, I believe it comes from our education system. Children are told for so many years to do what they are told or  get in trouble, in other words coerced into compliance. So this continues on ....

The masses go on to trust the government to make sure food is safe for their children and trust doctors to know that all vaccines are safe and beneficial for their children, yet in reality this is far from the truth.

I believe the solution is found by empowering yourself with knowledge! Read and research! We are blessed to be living in the information age, with an answer to any question at our fingertips.

When we were planning on falling pregnant, I read and researched widely on the topic. I didn't rely on the mainstream media to tell me what to do. The natural way was right for me......so I researched more and decided to focus on  nutrition and be completely chemical free in our home.  This led to a problem free pregnancy and natural home birth. All the while though, 'experts' were trying to coerce me into a hospital birth, but I trusted myself enough to remain true to what I thought was best. Although I was always open to going to the hospital at any time if the need be....a healthy baby was my main priority.

I have followed my intuition and trusted myself enough to know what is right for myself and my family, regardless of what society is telling me to do. I am open to listening to so-called experts and then I make my own informed choice.

I believe when we teach our children to trust authority without question (as questioning authority means insolence and punishment) then we are setting our children up for a lifetime of conformity. To me this is the opposite of creativity and free thinking, which allows children's real talents to shine through. Let's teach our children to trust themselves, by allowing them to question everything and form their own theories on life .

Who will make the most difference to our world in the future, the conformists or the free thinkers?

Want more on this topic...watch 'Your Indoctrination'.....

This is a 3 part movie by a famous Hollywood Director, documenting and researching answers to the questions: what is wrong with our world and how do we fix it?
It looks into the stories we tell ourselves as humans through science. How science has got it wrong in the past and now it has been proven wrong again. The message we gain is old news really and science has just caught up....but this can have a profound effect on our world and it's ability to sustain itself. It is what ancient religions and indigenous cultures have always known.....that we are all connected and LOVE is the only way to create change on our disconnected planet.

We can ALL create change, one little loving act at a time!

If you watch anything this week...let it be this!

Much Love

The natural way to a strong and healthy child is a healthy, strong immune system. Your child's immune system is their bodies defence system against infection & disease, and immunity is having the ability to fight off infection.

Children are more susceptible to illnesses and infections when young, as their immune system is not considered fully mature until around 14 years of age.

So what can we do to naturally nurture our children's developing immune system's?

In order to develop and thrive, children's immune system's need to be nourished by the essential nutrients it requires to function effectively. These are Vitamin A, B-Vitamins, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Selenium & Zinc.

All of these nutrients will be provided if your child has a diet made up of fruits, vegetables, lean meats/legumes, fish, wholegrains, nuts and seeds.  However your child's immune system will be weakened by excessive salt, sugar and saturated fats. A diet high in these substances may also lead to an increased  risk of illness later in life.

Also have a quick read through 'Back to Basics' for some ideas to rid chemicals from your lives, as the accumulative effect of these can impact your health and the health of your children, in the long term.

Every child is born with a certain level of immunity, which has been inherited from the mother, via the placenta during pregnancy, and then through the nourishing act of breastfeeding. Breastfeeding is the best protection against illness a mother can provide for their offspring. See the blog post 'Breast is Best'.

From birth onwards your child's immune system is strengthened by the exposure to a variety of different infections. So the immune system fights these germs by creating antibodies to attack them.  The amazing thing about our immune system is that whenever it fights off an infection, it stores this information, so that it can remember and protect your child against it the next time it appears. So while the immune system is developing, it gains strength after each and every encounter with infections.

So how does this work with artificial immunity created by immunisations?

Vaccination is based on the theory that immunity can be artifically created. So injecting babies and children with so-called harmless versions of a disease to stimulate the child's body to fight them off. So tiny babies of eight weeks old are been given a concoction of injections which not only have the ready-made antibodies, but also a variety of chemical fillers, that are a having disasterous effects in susceptible children.

This is a highly emotive subject. If you get the opportunity to watch The Greater Good, a documentary about the dangers of vaccinations, it could be the most important thing you watch in regard to the health of your child.
This link below will give you an overiew of the Greater Good and the themes of the documentary.
 http://youtu.be/8NHIDEqydS8

An interesting fact is that some children still seem to be getting these illnesses regardless of the vaccinations. For example, the prevalence of whooping cough in our region has been blamed on parents of children who choose not to vaccinate. However the majority of the children with the illness HAD been vaccinated! Both my children have had whooping cough and their immune systems effectively fought it off and they have been extremely strong and healthy ever since, with only mild colds and fevers.

Our bodies have an amazing ability to heal themselves, given the essential nutrients they need to function at an optimal level. So how is it that Doctors who have trained in the field of medicine, continue to prescribe antibiotics for viral conditions?

Antibiotics do have an important role to play in fighting bacterial infections. However most illnesses that children are exposed to in their early years are viral, ie colds, coughs, chicken pox etc. When your children contract these viral conditions, they need rest, lots of nurturing and nourishment to support their bodies natural immune system to do it's job. Every infection helps your child's immune system get stronger.

I have written an article on Naturally, Nurturing Colds, with love, rest and nourishing nutrition. Both my children have never needed antibiotics, as I am very vigilant about their diets, especially when they have an illness , so they won't develop into a bacterial infection.

Below are a list of foods that are packed full of immune-boosting nutrients that will help to protect your child from disease.

Avocado       Beetroot        Lettuce    Capsicum    Tomato  Cucumber
Watercress   Carrot           Broccoli         Onion      Parsnip
BokChoi    Cabbage          Sweet Potato    Kale       Cauliflower

This list can obviously be added to of course .....
Wherever possible, the majority of our diet is made up of certified organic and local products. The benefits of pesticide and GM free foods are immense and our environment is suffering from the endless spraying and disconnection and manipulation of nature.

Every product we buy has consequences.... for example we can buy some seeds manipulated from Monsanto or we can support a local certified organic seed saver... the choice is always ours.....we can be the change: one purchase at a time.

We also supplement our diets with a probiotic superfood 'Inliven'.
To watch a short video on the benefits of this amazing product scroll down to the end of this post.

As a mother, I care passionately about my children's health. My two children have had colds, viruses and digestive upsets, but as I mentioned earlier, have never needed antibiotics.

I am often told how lucky I am to have such strong and healthy children and yes I feel fortunate. However I also know that healthy, strong children do not just magically appear. I was mindful of everything I put near my body, prior to conception, all through pregnancy and while I was breastfeeding and now I make sure my children have a healthy and varied diet to enhance their health and strengthen their developing immune systems.

We can all help our children develop strong immune systems, by making conscious, informed choices regarding nutrition,  antibiotics and vaccinations. Medical professionals and doctors have a role to play in our lives, however do not only look to them in regard to our children's health, let's do our own research and make informed choices! Nature possesses a bountiful array of nutrients that support and strengthen our children's bodies. It is our responsiblity as  parent's  to nurture and nourish our children to optimal health.

I thought I would start out in saying that it is NOT my intention to add any guilt or upset to the mothers who do not breast feed their children.
However I do want to make a clear point that breast milk is far better for our children than artificial formulas.

For years formula companies have tried to market their products as just as good as breast milk. And people have blindly accepted this as truth. But in reality this is far from true.

Human milk is rich in the nurtrients needed for brain development. There are approximately 400 nutrients in breast milk that are not present in artificial formulas. And naturally, the amount of fats and other nutrients in mother's milk changes as a baby's needs change. The antibodies that help fight infections are only found in breast milk and cannot be created in a science lab.

Every mammal on earth has a perfect, nutritious, nourishing and natural food for their offspring. That of course is the milk each mammal naturally produces as a result of giving birth. There is no question in any other species about what to feed their new baby, their bodies naturally produce what it needs.

Sadly some human beings do not accept nature and would rather listen to mass media and opinions of others telling them what to feed their young, instead of trusting their natural instincts to breast feed.

But only you can decide whether to breast or bottle feed. It is your body and your baby.

Obviously breast milk is BETTER for babies as it is the milk nature intended for them, rather than artificial formula. Breast feeding also encourages close physical contact, bonding and connection between Mumma and baby. The regular eye contact deepens the bond between the two.

While the bubba feels nutured, nourished and secure, snuggled up into the warmth of their Mumma's boob, the breast feeding Mumma produces hormones that further calm and create a loving connection between the two.

The affectional bonding that occurs from the touch and eye contact during breast feeding helps the child to feel secure and will aid in fostering a positive emotional wellbeing in later years.

There are so many positives to breast feeding.....

*    Colostrum which is full of vital nutirents and has no artificial equivalent.

*    It is easy for babies to digest.

*    It is suitable for ALL babies.

*    You can feed wherever you are, travel is easy, no need to worry about sterile bottles etc.

*    Night feeds are easy, especially if you co-sleep. Just stay in bed and offer your boob.

*    Breast milk has the necessary minerals and important antibodies that babies need.

*    Connection and touch which is vitally important for bonding.

I can completely understand why some Mumma's get completely overwhelmed with the all-consuming nature of breast feeding. That feeling that you are resigned to the sofa with the almost constant feeds.
This is completely natural and will pass all too soon. Babies grow and develop so fast and before you know it, the baby stage is over and you wonder where your tiny baby has gone!

It is amazing how much you can grow emotionally, if you are willing to surrender to your child's needs and let go of everything else that you feel you need to be doing. We were never meant to raise children without support and whatever support you can get will help to nurture you as a Mumma and allow you to focus your energy on the vulnerable little human you are blessed to have.

Trying to do too much while breast feeding is a sure way to hinder the natural process. To nurture others, Mumma's first need to nurture themselves.

Often I hear Mumma's who are not sure if they can breast feed, or they tried to nurse, but failed or their milk dried up or their baby decided they wanted a bottle etc.

When I was pregnant, there was no question whether I would breast feed or not....my babies were going to get MY milk. So I nurtured my health, my emotions and affirmed to myself that I was strong and healthy and that my milk was nourishing and perfect for my baby.

Having this faith or trust in your body to naturally do what it is designed  to, is to me, THE most important factor in whether a Mumma will breast feed successfully or not.

It amazes me that today half of those who start breast feeding give up within the first six weeks. This is rarely because of lack of milk. More than likely it's because of lack of knowledge on breast feeding, no guidance or support or stress over the frustration from something so natural being so difficult.

This stress can lead to problems with the breasts, and milk supply. Louise L Hay states that breasts represent mothering, nurturing and nourishment. And if there are any problems while breast feeding ie soreness, mastitis etc there maybe a refusal to nourish the self. Putting everyone else first and forgetting your own needs. She puts forward an affirmation to help Mumma's through these problems.
'I am impotant. I count. I now care for and nourish myself with love and with joy'. (Louise L Hay, Heal your Body).

There is a lot of support for breast feeding mothers. I was fortunate to have a very supportive midwife who not only helped with my two home births, but was available anytime I needed her for advice and support on any birth, baby or breast matter. Even if it is just a breast feeding group online, at least then you will realise you are not alone in your concerns and may connect with other Mumma's who will willing share their advice and experience.

For me, full term breast feeding my two children was an amazingly enriching and connecting experience. I feel it worked because I was supported, nourished with nutritious food & self-nurtured.  Mainly though it was just natural for me to breast feed and I trusted that my body would do what it needed to do.

Breast feeding is best. Let's get back to nurturing and nourishing ourselves as Mumma's so we can give our babies a natural, nutritious  start for optimal health.

Gotta love Will.i.am, especially when he is pumping out groovy lyrics to help our children foster a strong positive self-belief!

Helping our children develop skills to identify and manage their feelings leads to an increase in confidence and self esteem which encourages positive thinking. All of these things create a positive healthy emotional base for children to grow from.

Turn it up loud and play it over & over!
