I feel so fortunate to be living in these times, in such a prosperous free country. It is such a secure feeling to know at any moment if I need supplies to create a meal, I can jump in my car and walk into a huge supermarket stocked with absolutely everything that we need and more! MORE, being the pivitol word. Do we really need all these things???
That whole aisle full of sugar-laden cereal, that big bottle of coke, that pre-made 'healthy' meal to throw in the microwave still in its plastic container. Are you even aware what is in all the food you consume day after day? Or what all those numbers on the food label signify? Do you wonder why your child gets constant sore tummies or their behaviour is erratic after consuming certain foods? How is possible that day after day you are tired and sleepy?
What if we were to let go of these things and embrace a diet similar to that of our Grandparents. Saying goodbye to the preservatives, colourings, flavour enhancers and sugar soaked products. Could we do it?
I believe we can. I am one of those people you see always reading the ingredients on the packets I am purchasing. Its not the 'fat free' or 'natural' or 'organic' you need to be looking for. Its the list of ingredients you do not understand that you need to be worried about. I urge you to do some research on your computer, check out www.foodadditiveslist.com
According to Bill Stratham 'The Chemical Maze', some of these additives, for example colours tartratzine (102) and sunset yellow (110), preservatives sodium cenzoote (211) and sulpher dioxide (220), artificial sweetners, aspartame (951) and saccharin (954), flavour enhancers MSG (621). These food additives cause or exacerbate complaints like asthma, hyperactivity, skin rashes, headaches and migranes, along with many other conditions. They may also be associated with organ problems, reproductive abnormalities, birth defects and cancer. Isn't it of the utmost importance that you empower yourselves with the knowledge that can keep your family free of disease and ill health?
When I buy the occasional bag of potato chips for our family, I will only buy the ones with three ingredients, potatoes, oil and salt. But there are some chips that have up to 25 additives and flavour enhancers!
I believe we can get back to basics. It is a way of life for millions of people who believe a natural wholefood diet is best for their families. Baking your own bread, eating predominately natural, raw whole foods, ie vegetables, nuts, legumes, fruit . Eating the foods our bodies are designed to digest with ease. Check out some easy recipes on our site or go wild and search the net, your options for divine, simple, healthy foods are endless!
How else can be get back to basics? Rid your home of chemicals, ie cleaners, bleach, sprays, oven cleaners, toxic skin creams, shampoos, soaps, foaming agents. As our skin absorbs everything we put on it, realistically, everything you put on your skin should be able to be put in your mouth. Would you eat that toxic sunscreen you put on your children everytime they go out into the sun? There are alternatives, check out www.integrity.mionegroup.com for natural certified organic skin care, health care and home products, made right here in Australia.
White vinegar and baking soda are brilliant cleaning agents and also very cheap. You can be safe in the knowledge that when your children want to help clean the windows (yeh right, you are all saying) it won't matter if they inhale the fumes or some of it gets on their skin. Sunny-Tao loves spraying vinegar on the glass around our home. Being three he is super helpful, because its fun, and I am happy in the fact that he is safe from harmful chemicals while helping. Check out a list published at www.healthier-cleaning-products.com for standards of green cleaning solutions that promote the best health and well-being benefits to people.
Eczema is a common inflammatory skin condition in children and can be exacerbated by perfumed soaps and creams. Both our children did not come into contact with any soaps until they really started to get dirty, which wasn't until they were running around outside. A bit of warm water was always sufficient. And if their skin seemed a little dry, a little olive, avocado or almond oil added to their nightly bath worked a treat. When your skin is washed too much with harsh chemicals, all your natural oils get washed away too. Check out our recipe for making your own natural soap, so then at least you will know what ingredients are in it.
"We don't have time for this" I hear families say. We both work and then there is sports, dance classes, etc etc....These are choices we make as a family. Do children really need to be running here, there and everywhere from one activity to the next? Maybe they might like to scooter with their friends, or climb trees or help you make a delicious dinner or even plant some vegetable seeds. All of these activities are learning, not only that, they are free and they allow you as a family to do more things together. It also allows children to unwind, and have time for unstructured play where a lot of valuable learning takes place.
I'm sure there are heaps of ways to nurture yourself as a parent during that extra time you have. I feel so good when I accomplish little things such as making my own soap or growing veges from seed. I find the effort and love I give creating wholesome delicious food, is all worthwhile when I see the boys happliy devouring all their dinner (not that this happens all the time!)
I understand getting back to basics, does take a bit of time and effort, but for me the rewards are too numerous to mention. I believe if we just take the first step to rid ourselves of chemicals and toxic foods we are well on the way to getting back to the basics of living.
