WhAt iS NatUrAL LeArnINg?

Natural learning to me is trusting in the natural process of your childs development that they know exactly what they need to learn and when they need to learn it.

Much like the natural growth of a flower from a seed. It germinates, grows taller with more leaves, then flower buds form and eventually the flowers will bloom. Did anyone teach the plant to do this? Did anyone force it to bloom before it was ready?  No, we trust in nature to work it's magic. Much like a healthy baby learning to walk and talk and a healthy child who is immersed in books and literacy will learn to read. Mem Fox, popular children's author stated that the best way to encourage your child to read is to read to them.

We have read to our boys from a very young age and they absolutely LOVE books. Its this love of books and literacy that I think is way more important than your child being at a particular level of reading by a certain age. Coaxing your child to read a book they are not interested in is NOT going to instill a love of literacy and books. I know from my own experience if I don't like a book, I won't waste time in reading it, there are too many books out there that I do want to read!

Natural learning is really about learning from life and all it's experiences. The article From Little things Big things Grow explores how every day at home, there is a feast of learning to be had, just being in your garden. 

It is easy to learn when you love what you are learning. As natural learning parent's we really want our children to have the freedom to choose how to live their lives and what they want to learn. The beauty of this is that we get to learn alongside our children; researching, reading, creating and connecting together. Sharing life's experiences and learning together as a family.
